"The Different Types Of Cemetery Property"

Don't know which type of cemetery property to buy? Here's a list of the six most common types with their benefits and disadvantages...

Burial Plots - A burial plot is a small section of cemetery land used for the burial of remains.
Benefits: The most common type of burial property -- so it's easier to find exactly what you're looking for.

Disadvantages: Because most burial plots are grouped together, they can become cluttered with other graves. So it's sometimes harder for a family member or friend to find them when visiting.
Lawn Crypts - An "in-ground" burial chamber constructed of steel-reinforced concrete, gravel, and other waterproof materials.
Benefits: Uses a drainage system to keep moisture out. Also, some lawn crypts come one ontop of another so you can be buried with your loved one in the same space -- for the same price.

Disadvantages: More expensive than most burial plots and cemetery lots.
Mausoleums - An "above-ground" building with crypts for entombment. There are two different types: community and private mausoleums.
Community Mausoleums are shared by many different people.
Benefits: Ideal for people who feel uneasy about being buried underground. Moisture is kept from your remains. Also, your costs are much lower than a private mausoleum because you share the overall expense with others.

Disadvantages: You have to share your space with many other people. You're only given a small slab of marble or granite on the front of your crypt to distinguish who you are.
Private Mausoleums can hold a single person or their family.
Benefits: Gives you a private "above-ground" structure for people to come remember and celebrate your life. Or a secluded burial place for your loved ones, so you can all be together.

Disadvantages: More expensive than any other type of cemetery property.
Columbariums - An "above-ground" monument, usually outdoors or part of a mausoleum, with niches for the entombment of cremated remains.
Benefits: For people who want to keep moisture from their cremains (cremated remains). Gives your loved ones an easy-to-find and elegant-looking place to visit.

Disadvantages: Your remains are grouped with other people's. More expensive than other types of cremation niches and scattering gardens.
Cremation Lots - A small burial plot for cremated remains.
Benefits: Costs less than a traditional burial plot because it occupies less space.

Disadvantages: Usually cluttered with other plots, which makes it harder to find.
Scattering Gardens - Many cemeteries offer a garden area where you can scatter your loved one's ashes.
Benefits: An inexpensive way to have a beautiful memorial where people can visit, reflect, and celebrate the life of a loved one.

Disadvantages: Your marker can get cluttered with other people's.
